今週の英語雑学 – イディオム - “C-1”
解説
イディオム（慣用句）のCで始まるものです。
量がかなり多いので、4回くらいに分けてお届けする予定です。
- Call it a day
直訳すると『それを一日と呼ぶ』になります。何も一日とは限りませんが、『（今日は）それで終わりにする、それで十分だ』というような感じでしょうか。
I'm getting a bit tired - let's call it a day.

- Call sb names
直訳すると『人を（悪意ある）名前で呼ぶ』、つまり悪口を言うということです。
He was worried that if he wears glasses at school the other children will call him names. To his surprise, he gained popularity due to his resemblance to the famous Korean actor “Yong-sama”
- Call a spade a spade
日本語で”spade”はなんと言うのでしょう？鋤？実家ではシャベルと言っていたような気もしますが、下の動画を見ると実物が出てきますね。『鋤を鋤と呼ぶ』、つまり『たとえ不快なことであっても、ありのままに（歯に衣着せず）事実を言う』ということですね。どうして『キツネをキツネと呼ぶ』じゃいけなかったのでしょうか…。

『あなたのカードをテーブルの上に並べて下さい』。つまり『隠さず、手の内を見せる』ということですね。

- Carrot and stick
日本語では『飴とムチ』ですね、馬を基準にすればニンジンですが。

- Put the cart before the horse
『馬の前に貨車を配置する』、つまり間違った順序で物事を行うことです。『本末転倒ですよ』と言いたい時に使えますね。

"catch someone red-handed"とも言います。『現場を押さえる』ですね。最後は笑いで締めましょう。
